Hi Friend,
I am an anesthesiologist. In Ukraine, I trained surgical teams in under-resourced, understaffed hospitals in the midst of active fighting. The hospital staff I trained were fearless but did not have experience providing medical care in active war zones. I taught them how to treat war-related injuries on a large scale and distributed much-needed medical supplies and surgical instruments.
When a crisis occurs, we, as Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff, do what is necessary. Since the start of the war in February, we’ve significantly scaled up our activities to help meet the evolving needs of those affected. Currently, we have about 700 international and Ukrainian total staff members in the field and we’ve distributed over 800 metric tons of medical and relief supplies.
Since my first assignment for MSF in Sri Lanka during 2003, I have never witnessed a war like this. I spent six weeks at three hospitals near active fighting. There were huge material needs and gaps in knowledge on triage, treating patients in mass casualty situations, and how to perform surgery on patients with traumatic injuries.
I’ve seen how the war in Ukraine has spared no mercy for civilians, residential areas, and even medical facilities. Many face ongoing uncertainty due to indiscriminate violence, displacement, food insecurity, and mounting needs related to mental health. Our teams are providing on-the-ground support as the war continues, and as long as people need help, we won’t stop.
