Twelve years ago I got a rejection that would transform my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined. A friend had recommended I apply for this amazing new leadership program, an New Leaders Council chapter in DC.
NLC sounded like a place where I could find my people, my path.
I learned more about the organization through its alumni. It was a grassroots movement of young leaders who wanted something different for this country. Who chose to invest in their own leadership since institutions kept overlooking what they had to offer. It was a chance to be part of something bigger than myself – it was not only a network in DC but a community across the south, the Midwest, over to California. So when I didn’t get accepted when I first applied, I knew I wasn’t going to give up on NLC. I applied again – and when I got into the 2012 class, there was no looking back. I was hooked. I was committed.
Today, 10 years later, I’m asking you to be that alumni or community supporter who shares the joy of NLC with others. I’m asking you to reach out to a friend, family member, co-worker, or neighbor, and encourage them to invest in themselves and thus, their community. |
Can you take a moment to nominate and follow up with someone you know? You may have someone on your mind already. Someone who is committed to equity and progress, someone who is passionate about their industry or the issues they care about. Someone who loves their community deeply and wants to make an impact. |

Imagine how our country’s story would change if our leaders looked like those they wish to represent; if we had more people of color, people with disabilities, and people who identify as LGBTQ+ in our state capitols, the pitch rooms at major news publications, and the boardrooms of our country’s top businesses and foundations.
When I look to the future, I envision NLC alumni in the room where it happens. I imagine them - including the folks you nominate for the 2023 Institute - blasting through the doors, opening them wide for our communities. Building new rooms that haven’t yet been designed.
We come together through NLC committed to progress, to our communities, to one another. This is not a moment, but a movement. And to sustain momentum longterm, our countryneeds a continuous pipeline of new leaders. NLC is that pipeline where emerging changemakers learn and grow in their local cohorts and collaborate across the national network of chapters and beyond with NLC’s national network. To keep the momentum going, we need alumni and community supporters like you to share opportunities with promising new leaders and encourage them to apply to our six-month, tuition-free, skills-based Institute. |
