Welcome to the December edition of the Southside newsletter, keeping you up to date with the latest developments in the Broadmarsh area and other major redevelopments in Nottingham.

Cranes in the air mean jobs on the ground
Cranes in the air above the Broadmarsh area

Cranes in the air are not only a symbol of the regeneration of Nottingham, they also mean construction jobs for over 1,000 people. The transformation of Nottinghams Southside is fully underway and even before the new developments have been completed, the benefits of the development are being realised through the construction jobs that have been generated. To date, the redevelopment work has brought over 1,000 jobs to Nottingham, with over 50% of these taken up by Nottingham and Nottinghamshire residents across a range of roles. New starters have taken up jobs across the various construction projects in the Southside area, with more roles and funded training courses advertised and available through Nottingham Jobs as construction programmes progress. Tower crane above intu Broadmarsh, and demolition at Drury Walk

Work continues at intu Broadmarsh, with significant demolition work taking place and the removal of the roof over the Drury Walk entrance near Bridlesmith Gate. 2020 will see further major redevelopment with the arrival of a second tower crane in January, new retailers announced and further work across the site to bring a new retail and leisure destination to Nottingham in Summer 2021.

Broadmarsh Car Park progressing quickly

Steel construction at the corner of Canal Street and Carrington Street

Three mobile cranes are on site at the new Broadmarsh Car Park, Bus Station and Central Library, quickly erecting the steel frame and flooring of the new structure, illustrating the scale of the new building and Library corner. Design proposals for the new Central Library will soon be available for consultation, demonstrating how the space will create a modern library, including the best childrens library in the country.

City Hub taking shape - and colour
Cladding on the new Nottingham College City Hub

The tower crane from Nottingham Colleges City Hub has left the site, signalling that the main structural construction work has been completed. Cladding of the building is underway, with work on the second block of the building beginning in November and highlighting the future aesthetic of the building, which is in line with the heritage of the area and more modern elements like Nottingham Contemporary.

Nottingham city centre is changing and you can help shape it
Nottingham Old Market Square

Peoples views are being sought on how Nottingham city centre should develop, grow and change to ensure it remains an attractive and prosperous place for residents, workers and visitors in the future. Metro Dynamics has now produced a City Centre Strategy report which outlines possible new projects and directions for the city centre and as part of the information gathering process, now wants to hear from members of the public what they think of the ideas or if they have other thoughts on ways the city can improve. You can find the strategy and summary documents and have your say here. [ [link removed] ]

Construction and redevelopment work continues at Unity Square and Nottingham Castle respectively, and will continue throughout 2020.

Work on Carrington Street is creating an attractive entrance to Nottingham from the train station in advance of the completion of the Broadmarsh redevelopment programme. Scaffolding is down at City Buildings, with new lighting highlighting its faade, and the Gordon House restoration has brought the frontage back to its former glory.
