Hi John,
If you’re anything like me, you’ll be feeling pretty crushed today. The election result is a setback for many of the issues we work on – and it’s no surprise to see Donald Trump celebrating it on Twitter.
But this result has fired the starting gun on a US-UK trade deal, so we need to rouse ourselves for the coming fight. For Boris Johnson, this trade deal has long been a tool to kickstart a dangerous reshaping of our economy and society. There has been talk of locking us in to a deal in a matter of months.
Global Justice Now will be at the forefront of stopping the new government’s plans for a toxic US-UK trade deal which threatens our NHS, our food standards and the environment. Will you join us by donating

Throughout the general election campaign, we worked hard to tell people what a serious threat a US-UK trade deal would be for our food standards, our fight against climate change and our NHS. We brought the redacted minutes of the trade talks to public attention, raising awareness of just how secretive trade talks can be these days. And yesterday and today, we have been taking the government to court to challenge their ability to keep the US negotiating papers secret. We’ll keep you updated on the results when we know more.
Despite the secrecy, it’s now clear that we were right. We know what Trump’s administration wants from a trade deal with us. It wants Britain to allow more steroids, hormones and antibiotics into our food production. It wants us to remove limits on the ability of big pharmaceutical corporations to dictate astronomical prices for medicines, and to further open up the NHS to US corporations. And it wants to prevent any attempt to regulate the actions of Silicon Valley digital giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook.
And as if that wasn’t enough this deal could also intensify the climate emergency by preventing stricter rules for dirty fossil fuels, and blocking climate action.
But it’s not a foregone conclusion. While the election result continues to be digested, we must be clear that it is not a blank cheque for Boris Johnson to sign any trade deal with Donald Trump he wants. The election campaign has shown how much concern and opposition there is to a trade deal with Trump. We now plan to turbo charge our campaign to stop a toxic US-UK trade deal. But we need your help.
From lobbying key MPs to organising a UK-wide series of events, Global Justice Now has got a string of hard-hitting campaign actions planned for the new year. As a supporter who believes in putting people and the environment before corporate profit, will you consider donating today?

Boris Johnson's government sees a trade deal with Trump as central to the type of Brexit it wants. Committed to an extreme free market approach, the government can use this deal to give agribusiness giants, big pharmaceutical companies and Big Tech what they’ve been asking for for years: deregulating and slashing existing UK standards meant to protect people like you and me.
In a globalised economy, a US-UK trade deal impacts the whole world. Giving corporations free rein here in the UK increases their power and ability to act with impunity anywhere. A lack of corporate accountability in countries like the UK makes it near impossible to put limits on corporate power in countries in the global south.
It would also block further action on the climate emergency. We already know that US negotiators have banned discussion of climate change from the talks. At a time when corporations are burning the resources of the global south for profit, a trade deal would impose business as usual. And if regulations to support climate action are ever introduced, then as the icing on the cake, US companies could also sue us in corporate courts if they think it will affect their profits.
With your donation today, we can ramp up our campaign in time to stop the US-UK trade deal by lobbying MPs, getting more signatures on our petition, and organising public speaker events around the country. Will you donate today?

To build the world we want, to rein in corporate power, to halt the climate crisis and to secure access to medicines and other vital resources for all, we need to stop the looming US-UK trade deal.
Despite today’s result, I’m certain that we can do this. As you probably already know, we fought hard to defeat TTIP, the toxic trade deal between the US and EU in 2016. And we won! Tens of thousands of people have already joined our campaign against the deal, and we’re working with a wide range of groups who all see the risks the deal poses.
The election may be over, but our fight for the world we want is not. Together, we can stop this toxic trade deal.
Thank you for making a difference.
Best wishes,
Jean Blaylock
