Social Security turns 87 this month, but if Washington Republicans have it their way, it won’t survive to see 88.

“Rick Scott wants to ‘sunset’ Social Security”
- WAMC Northeast Public Radio, 4/15/2022
“Rubio Proposal Would Weaken Social Security”
- Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 7/5/2022

No worker should have to worry their pensions might disappear in five years at the government’s whim. (That’s Scott’s plan.) And no parent should have to choose between staying home to take care of a newborn and being able to retire with dignity and security. (Rubio’s plan.)
This is personal for me. My mother Peggy relies on Social Security as her primary source of income and she’s far from alone. For tens of millions of Americans -- not just seniors but children, veterans, and disabled workers, too -- Social Security is a lifeline.
I’ve helped Marylanders navigate the Social Security system to make sure they get the benefits they’ve earned, and I plan to keep working to not just protect Social Security but strengthen it, too.
