Managing Chronic Health Conditions
Emergency Medications Toolkit

Emergency or rescue medications are an important life-saving tool in the school nurse’s office. School nurses are experts at understanding chronic conditions and responding to health emergencies, particularly for their students with asthma, allergies, diabetes, and seizure disorders. To assist school nurses in this work, NASN has assembled a toolkit of resources to support implementing evidence-based practice for emergency medication administration. This toolkit contains policy development practice tools, including guidelines for advocating for evidence-based school health policy and model policies, and evidence-based practice tools, including algorithms for managing medical emergencies and protocol for delegation of emergency medication.
Improving School Community & Student Health
State Laws on School Nursing Outline Copious Responsibilities
On August 9, 2022, Child Trends released an analysis of the current landscape of state statutes and regulations on school nursing. The document reports the impact of state laws on the availability of school nurses, their responsibilities, and their contribution to public health.
Important Changes Coming to Medicaid and CHIP Program Eligibility
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Connecting Kids to Coverage National Campaign wants you to know that families with health coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) may soon need to take steps to renew their coverage once states resume Medicaid and CHIP eligibility reviews. Beneficiaries must confirm that their contact information is up-to-date with their state Medicaid offices; so they don’t miss important renewal notices coming by mail. Please help spread the word with resources available at https://medicaid.gov/unwinding. Families can visit www.medicaid.gov/renewals to find their state Medicaid office phone number and website to update their contact information.

  • NASN Resources: Cleaning hands regularly is a key preventive action to avoid exposure to the COVID-19 virus and other infectious diseases. The role of the school nurse is to inform school administrators, staff, and students on the impact of and understanding the importance of implementing good hand hygiene practices in helping to ensure health and safety in the school community. See NASN's video on handwashing.
CDC Resources for Monkeypox in Children and Adolescents
CDC released clinical considerations to help school nurses and other healthcare providers develop a plan for managing children and adolescents with exposure to monkeypox, suspected monkeypox, or confirmed monkeypox. Learn more about clinical symptoms, treatment, and infection control.

When properly administered before or after a recent exposure, vaccines can be effective tools in protecting against monkeypox illness. Learn more about considerations for monkeypox vaccination.
