Green Party Email
Dear John,

The most important thing I want to say to you this morning is, thank you.

Together, we have made this General Election a Climate Election. We were the first party to deliver our manifesto, and from that point onwards we set the agenda in many ways and the other parties were vying to compete with our Green New Deal.

In this election, the Green Party led the debate on how to address climate chaos and create a society that works for everyone.

Yesterday, there were more than 850,000 votes cast for Green candidates, over 300,000 more than in 2017 and more than the Brexit Party. Each vote was a signal that together we will hold the Government to account to deliver a net zero Britain that is fairer for all by 2030.

Our increase in vote share nationwide is equivalent to the Tories or the SNP, however our broken electoral system has helped these parties win more seats.

We’ve seen Caroline Lucas re-elected with an increased majority in Brighton Pavilion and our vote share doubled in Bristol West achieving second place. In Dulwich and West Norwood we also gained second place receiving 16% of the vote up from 2% previously.

And never before have Greens received so much media attention.

Never before have so many voters said that climate was the issue of such importance. Never before did a party launch a New Deal for Nature, addressing the biodiversity and the climate crisis. Never before has there been a Leaders' Climate Debate and never before did so many parties talk about a need for a Green New Deal, which we originated in 2008.

As we move towards 2020, the most important year for the climate, these election results demonstrate the role we will continue to play to deliver a plan for progress.

Our brilliant Caroline Lucas will return to Parliament to put forward her Green New Deal Bill, a Future Generations Bill and a Sustainable Economy Bill. In addition, Caroline will continue to campaign for the closest possible relationship with the EU, for urgent climate action and for the protection of our natural world, workers’ rights, human rights – and our democracy.
Beyond every election is another and in May next year, we face some critical local and mayoral elections around the country. Having doubled our number of councillors and MEPs earlier this year we’re confident we can make more gains in 2020.

And this success is all down to our brilliant supporters like you John.

Whether you got active with your local party or spoke to friends and family about the power of voting Green, we send you a huge thank you – we couldn’t have received this many votes without you.

We are now 50,000 members strong and growing every day. Join the Green Party today and get involved in our big plans for 2020!

Best wishes,

Siân Berry & Jonathan Bartley
Co-leaders, Green Party of England and Wales
