Friend,
A majority of Americans now support legalizing cannabis. 37 states have
legalized medical cannabis, 19 of which also allow recreational sales. Yet
the federal government still classifies it as a Schedule I substance, on
par with heroin and LSD.
The consequences of this policy have been felt for decades. According to a
2020 [ [link removed] ]report by the ACLU, Black Americans are 3.6 times more likely to
be arrested for cannabis-related crimes than white Americans. Of the more
than 350,000 Americans [ [link removed] ]arrested for marijuana-related crimes in 2020,
over 90% were charged with mere possession. These decisions are not only
out of touch, but cause lasting damage to people’s lives.
[ [link removed] ]Sign if you agree: It’s time to end the federal prohibition of
marijuana.
These ongoing injustices are why I have supported reform since my first
campaign for Congress, and why I support the [ [link removed] ]Cannabis Administration
and Opportunity Act. Introduced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer
and Senators Cory Booker and Ron Wyden, this bill would bring an end to
federal marijuana prohibition, giving states the power to pass cannabis
policies that work best for their state. It would also support programs to
expunge marijuana charges from criminal records and support small
businesses getting licensed in legal markets.
There is no excuse for our outdated federal marijuana laws. They are bad
for public health, bad for the people caught in the criminal justice
system, and bad for our economy.
[ [link removed] ]Tell Congress: Pass the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act.
In solidarity,
Ro
