Welcome to the December issue of COPE Digest.
December is generally a time when we reflect on the past year and plan for the future. This December letter will follow that format. 2020. It is finally here. I remember many planners and strategic futurists over the past decade capturing 2020 in the titles of their plans, thinking that they were unique in playing on the title as a metaphor for the visual acuity of their future prognostications. To the extent that they predicted continued complexity and uncertainty in all things human, they were not taking too great a leap into the unknown.

The authorship case continues to hold the top spot of most read cases and we've seen five new authorship cases ([link removed]) discussed at the COPE Forum in 2019.

We introduced this game in March, inviting readers to continue the story of Jo, a fictional new research integrity officer at a large public university where Jo was immediately challenged with a dispute between authors.

** DISCUSSION TOPIC: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DECISION MAKING

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has advanced steadily over the past several years, and has started to introduce data-driven solutions to many processes throughout the publication process. With the advancement of AI, questions surrounding the relevant ethics arise as to if, when, and how AI could/should be used. We started the discussion on these ethical issues.

Following on from the success of previous COPE workshops with ISMTE (International Society of Managing and Technical Editors), we are delighted to announce another half day workshop in Melbourne.
The workshop is hands-on, with attendees working through publication ethics issues from real cases raised by COPE members to identify what next steps should be taken, with the help of COPE Council members.
COPE Council members Michael Wise and Trevor Lane will run the workshop using the collective advice and guidance from COPE as well as their own perspectives.

Trevor Lane, COPE Council Member, was invited to represent COPE at the 2019 Convention of the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) in Xi’an, China.
On the first day, he delivered a keynote speech in a session on publication ethics and on the second day, he chaired a parallel session on journal evaluation.
