With only 3 months left until the midterms, the New Politics team is in overdrive. We recently launched our New Power Project to help candidates from under-resourced and underserved communities overcome the obstacles and challenges that come with running for office, at any level.
We seek and endorse candidates that will bring a spirit of servant leadership to office in critical roles and races across the nation. That means supporting the development of folks who we know will get things done for their communities with courage, integrity, and empathy.Today, we want to introduce you to Pavel Payano.

Pavel’s family came to Lawrence, MA in the late 80s in search of the American dream. For the past several decades his parents worked as teachers in Lawrence Public Schools. As a product of the Lawrence Public School system and son of two Lawrence Public School teachers, he is deeply committed to improving K-12 education and making higher education more affordable and accessible to working class families.
Pavel has dedicated the last eleven years of his life to serving the Lawrence community, first as a School Committee member and currently as a City Councilor At- Large. As a member of the Lawrence School Committee, he advocated for initiatives that reduced the achievement gap and increased post-secondary student enrollment. As a City Councilor, he has successfully led on public safety measures, secured additional public school funding, and spearheaded public health initiatives.

Pavel’s commitment and passion lies in working to eradicate racial and economic inequities and ensuring that every person has an opportunity to achieve the American dream.

⇢ Pavel earned three degrees including a law degree from Suffolk University Law School.
⇢ He currently resides in Lawrence with his beautiful dog, Teja.
⇢ He has helped dozens of incarcerated youth obtain the credits they needed to graduate high school and start post-high-school training or education.

We support outstanding military veterans and national service leaders, alumni of programs like AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps, to step up and serve our country again, this time through politics. We were proud to be behind the movement of veterans who ran for office for the first time in 2018, and we have big plans to grow into the future.
