It's nearly been a year since the regime takeover in Afghanistan that ushered in a major humanitarian crisis in the country.
In that time, the U.S. has welcomed over 76,000 Afghans under Operation Allies Welcome through a special process called "humanitarian parole." But while this process was implemented to bring Afghans to the U.S. safely and quickly, it offers a temporary solution, and does not guarantee lawful permanent residence or eventual citizenship.
But John, that could all change today with the bipartisan introduction of the Afghan Adjustment Act that was just announced this week. This bill will create a pathway for Afghans who entered the U.S. on humanitarian parole to become legal permanent residents and eventually U.S. citizens.

Without this bill, thousands of Afghans could be forced to find other pathways to stay in the U.S., including entering an asylum system plagued with a backlog of over a million cases.
Above all else, Congress has taken similar actions in the past when large populations seeking safety were welcomed into the U.S., and they should do so again.
Afghans will almost certainly fall through the cracks and be vulnerable to detention and deportation. That is why it is crucial that you take action today.
