Dear friend,

Last week was a big week for federal reform, with two major developments.

First, Colette Peters was sworn in as the new director of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). I was invited to the ceremony, which was attended by all the leaders of the Justice Department, including Attorney General Merrick Garland. I hope that the presence of DOJ leaders shows that they are committed to supporting Ms. Peters — and to fixing the BOP.

People have asked me if I think she is going to be able to turn the BOP around. My view is that the BOP needs a major overhaul — and no single person is going to fix things. Change won't happen overnight. I also don't think government agencies can police themselves. We need greater transparency and accountability. For that reason, FAMM is going to continue to push for independent oversight of the BOP.

The second major development was the confirmation of seven nominees to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. For the first time in more than three years, the Commission will be able to do its work again. That work includes writing and adjusting the guidelines for the 55,000+ people sentenced in federal court every year.

FAMM will be contacting the Commission soon to suggest priorities for their consideration. We'll likely ask you to weigh in, so please keep an eye out for future communications on this topic.

Our federal sentencing and prison policies need to be reformed. For that reason, we need Ms. Peters and the new members of the Sentencing Commission to be successful. FAMM is going to do everything we can to help them.

Best,
