Next week marks the one-year anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Afghans have seen their most basic liberties rescinded under the regime, including women and girls who are losing their fundamental educational, personal, and social rights.
For 20 years, Afghans worked tirelessly to build a more democratic nation. In the aftermath of the republic’s collapse, Anne C. Richard, Freedom House's Lead for the Afghanistan Human Rights Coordination Mechanism, calls on democratic leaders to do more to help Afghan human rights defenders and work to better protect their lives and advance our shared values.
