New York AG Deposes Trump Over False Business Representations

This comes just two days after his Florida home is raided by the FBI. Daily Wire: Former President Donald Trump is facing a deposition from New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday in relation to a civil investigation into his family’s business practices. Court documents from James’ office released earlier this year claimed that the Trump Organization has overstated the value of land donations in New York and California, misreported the size of Trump’s penthouse in Manhattan, and otherwise “used fraudulent or misleading asset valuations to obtain a host of economic benefits, including loans, insurance coverage, and tax deductions” (Daily Wire). Wall Street Journal: In a statement Wednesday, Mr. Trump said he was following the advice of his counsel to assert his right under the Fifth Amendment of the constitution to not answer questions. “When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice,” Mr. Trump said. He said the search of his Florida residence Monday by federal agents also impacted his decision. “I have absolutely no choice because the current Administration and many prosecutors in this Country have lost all moral and ethical bounds of decency,” Mr. Trump said. The federal agents’ search in Florida is related to White House documents and is separate from the state attorney general’s office’s probe (Wall Street Journal).

DOJ Pressured to Reveal Reason for Raiding President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Home

Epoch Times: The Justice Department has to respond to motions to unseal a warrant that triggered the FBI raid on former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, according to a magistrate judge who reportedly approved the search. Judicial Watch and the Albany Times Union newspaper filed a motion to unseal the document earlier this week, which was granted by a judge in the case. “On or before 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on August 15, 2022, the Government shall file a Response to the Motion to Unseal,” wrote Judge Bruce Reinhart on Wednesday afternoon, referring to the Department of Justice (Epoch Times). Byron York: In the end, it might turn out that the original impressions were right, that the raid really was about more than the National Archives and the Presidential Records Act. But at the moment, it appears the FBI has again engaged in its trademark anti-Trump overkill. And that’s why many of the former president’s supporters are angry. No, that does not justify violence on anyone’s part. It doesn’t justify an ugly riot like Jan. 6. But of course Trump’s supporters are angry at the FBI. From their point of view, it’s the old unfair treatment happening again (Washington Examiner).

Republicans Launch Probe Into National Archives Regarding Trump Raid

Epoch Times: Oversight GOP figures are requesting the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provide information on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) raid of former president Donald Trump’s resort in Mar-a-Lago. NARA’s singling out of President Trump’s handling of official records stands starkly in contrast to the way NARA has treated far clearer violations committed by politicians and officials who are not Republicans,” 20 Republicans, including numerous Committee ranking members, wrote in an Aug. 10 letter addressed to U.S. Acting Archivist Debra Wall. The GOP members of Congress are requesting that the NARA provide a “Member-level briefing” on the following no later than Aug. 17 (Epoch Times). Axios: The Oversight letter dovetails with a similar preservation request sent by House Intelligence Committee ranking member Mike Turner (R-Ohio) to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday. House Judiciary Committee ranking member Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has called for Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland to testify to the panel when the House returns Friday (Axios).

Poll: Voters Galvanized After Trump’s Home Raided by FBI

Washington Examiner: A quickie Trafalgar/Convention of States poll following Monday’s FBI raid of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago winter home boosted voter enthusiasm among Republicans and independents, most of which believe the search was politically motivated to punish the 45th president. 76.7 percent of Republican voters believe Trump’s political enemies are behind the FBI raid on Trump’s private home. 53.9 percent of independent voters believe Trump’s political enemies are behind the FBI raid on Trump’s private home. 83.3 percent of Republican voters say the FBI raid on Trump has increased their motivation to vote in the 2022 election. 71.7 percent of independent voters say the FBI raid on Trump has increased their motivation to vote in the 2022 election (Washington Examiner). Steve Cortes: @trafalgar_group poll shows 83% of Republicans are more motivated to vote because of the police state raid against Trump’s home & office (Twitter).

IRS Commissioner Claims Agency Will Not Weaponize Against Middle Class, Small Business

Federalist: While the Democrats’ so-called Inflation Reduction Act will use taxpayer dollars to pack the Internal Revenue Service with 87,000 new agents, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed there won’t be any new audits on people making less than $400,000 a year. The claim is ridiculous on its face. Over 99 percent of Americans make less than $400,000 per year. And while the IRS employs more than 78,000 people full-time, the agency has fewer than 66,000 agents as of March to handle its audits. But the Biden White House wants you to believe these 87,000 new agents will be reserved for auditing the top 1 percent, with no effect on everyday Americans (Federalist). Fox News: Americans who earn less than $75,000 per year are slated to receive 60% of the additional tax audits expected under Democrats’ spending package, according to an analysis released by House Republicans (Fox News). Don’t worry though, IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig claims the agency will “absolutely not” use the new funding or 87 thousand new agents to target Americans. We are supposed to trust him like we trust our other institutions… like the DOJ (IRS).

President Biden: "Today we received news that our economy had 0% inflation in the month of July"

Daily Wire: President Joe Biden claimed on Wednesday that the United States experienced “zero percent inflation in the month of July” while ignoring that the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Consumer Price Index Report announced inflation rose 8.5% year-over-year. On Wednesday, the Consumer Price Index Report revealed that the rate of inflation is down from June’s 9.1% inflation rate. It did show that “zero percent” inflation occurred from June to July but that the country still experienced an increase in prices overall compared to a year ago (Daily Wire). John Cooper of Heritage Foundation: Joe Biden claims, multiple times, that there was “zero inflation” in July. Absolutely false. Year-over-year inflation was 8.5% in July (Twitter). Asma Khalid of NPR: To be clear, inflation dipped from a 40-year high. The Labor Department reported this morning that consumer prices in July were 8.5% higher than a year ago (Twitter). Townhall: Simultaneously, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter that the price of “some things” went up, but not gas prices or clothes. But bragging about a 0.1 percent monthly decrease in clothing costs when apparel prices are up 5.1 percent annually is a pathetic attempt to invalidate Americans’ hardship (Townhall).

House Dems Ask Wyoming Democrats to Switch Party, Vote for Liz Cheney

ABC: Two House Democrats — from New Jersey and Minnesota — are appealing to members of their own party in Wyoming to “consider” changing their affiliations ahead of the state’s contentious Republican primary on Aug. 16 in order to back incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney. In separate advertisements from an organization called Wyomingites Defending Freedom And Democracy, Reps. Tom Malinowski and Dean Phillips asked Wyoming Democrats to “consider temporarily switching parties” in order to vote for Cheney, one of Donald Trump’s most vocal critics, over Cheney’s Trump-backed opponent (ABC). Daily Wire: The strategy seeks to keep Cheney in power as she faces tough competition from Republican candidate Harriet Hageman who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The congresswoman has also faced strong opposition from her own party in Wyoming over her vote to impeach Trump after January 6, 2021, and her involvement in the House Select Committee to investigate the events of that day (Daily Wire).

Ilhan Omar Keeps Minnesota Seat by Narrow Margin

National Review: Don Samuels, the Minneapolis community activist who attempted to unseat congresswoman and “Squad” member Representative Ilhan Omar in the Democratic primary, conceded the race late Tuesday, setting up Omar as the heavy favorite to win a third term in Congress. With 98 percent of precincts reporting by 10:30 p.m., Omar had received 56,392 votes, or 50.39 percent, compared with Samuels’s 53,890 votes, or 48.15 percent. None of the other three candidates in the Democratic primary cracked 1 percent of the vote (National Review). Associated Press: Samuels argued that Omar is divisive and helped defeat a ballot question last year that sought to replace the city police department with a new public safety unit. He and others also successfully sued the city to force it to meet minimum police staffing levels called for in Minneapolis’ charter. Samuels said his narrow loss shows that Omar is beatable: “If this was the general election, no doubt that we would have won this race.” Omar countered, “Tonight’s victory is a testament to how much our district believes in the collective values we are fighting for” (Associated Press).

US Continues to Sail Warships in Taiwan Strait, China Inches Closer to Taking the Island

New York Times: The Biden administration is vowing to continue sailing warships through the Taiwan Strait and to conduct air operations in the region in response to Chinese military drills that U.S. officials say are evolving into a long-term strategy of heightened military pressure on the island. Administration officials said they did not want to escalate the tense confrontation, which China maintains was provoked by last week’s visit to the island by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. But in interviews and public statements, American and Taiwanese officials made clear they now believe China used Ms. Pelosi’s visit as a pretext to step up its operations to intimidate Taiwan for months or years to come, and perhaps speed the timetable of its plans to establish control over the island’s 23 million people, much as it did in Hong Kong (New York Times). Reuters: China has withdrawn a promise not to send troops or administrators to Taiwan if it takes control of the island, an official document showed on Wednesday, signaling a decision by President Xi Jinping to grant less autonomy than previously offered. China’s white paper on its position on self-ruled Taiwan follows days of unprecedented Chinese military exercises near the island, which Beijing claims as its territory, in protest against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit last week (Reuters).

Fauci Puzzled: Complains About Americans’ Hesitance to Vax, Boost, Wear Masks

Fox News: Dr. Anthony Fauci complained during a talk Tuesday evening that many Americans see forced masking policies as a violation of their liberties. During the talk, Fauci, who is President Biden’s chief medical adviser and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, expressed concern about Americans’ aversion to both forced masking and receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. He characterized individuals’ concerns with such policies as “inexplicable.” “When you tell people they need to mask in an indoor congregate setting when you’re in a zone that has a high dynamic of infection — that is looked upon by a lot of people, not everybody, as an encroachment on your freedom,” Fauci remarked during the event hosted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center campus in Seattle. “We’ve never had that before,” he added. “It’s almost inexplicable” (Fox News). National Review: Fauci’s comments come weeks after he said that if he could change anything about his response to the pandemic, he would have recommended that the government impose “much, much more stringent restrictions” during the spring of 2020 (National Review).
