Dear Friend,
As a former prosecutor I am extremely troubled by the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago. This administration has failed to secure our borders and to stop out-of-control violent crime and has instead targeted the former President with their law enforcement resources.
The American people are demanding answers regarding the FBI raid, especially regarding the motivation and rationale of the FBI to raid the home of a former President of the United States and potential political opponent of the current president. It is the duty of the United States Congress to conduct oversight investigations into such actions, and I have called for an immediate Congressional inquiry to get answers.
You can read my letter to the Judiciary Committee and Oversight and Reform Committee below. Many Republicans have called for similar investigations and, together, we will get answers on these unprecedented events.
Dear Chairman Nadler and Chairwoman Maloney:
I am deeply troubled by the raid conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. I urge your committees to conduct immediate investigational hearings to ensure proper Congressional oversight of this matter.
On Monday, August 8, 2022, the FBI entered Mar-a-Lago and seized boxes of materials from President Trump’s property. However, little is known yet of the rationale, legal basis under which the FBI acted, or other details surrounding this unprecedented decision.
The American people are rightly concerned about the Department of Justice’s motivations for executing a search in a former President’s home and the standard this event sets for our Federal government and political system moving forward. Therefore, it is critical for Congress to perform our essential oversight responsibilities and work to obtain needed answers.
To preserve the trust of the American people in our judicial system, these hearings should take top priority and should be conducted immediately. Please let me know what I can do to expedite these proceedings.
The Left's Unprecedented Spending During an Economic Crisis
This week, I will travel back to Washington, D.C., to vote against the Left’s misleading “Inflation Reduction Act” because it will not improve inflation for the American people in the short term, but it will increase taxes on hard-working Americans who cannot afford more liberal spending.
This is not the first time Washington Democrats have used misleading bill names to hide their spending goals. In March of 2021, Congressional Democrats passed a huge spending bill mislabeled as "covid relief" that shocked the economy with nearly $2 trillion in excessive spending and helped led to the inflation crisis we see today.
The Left is now attempting to use the same trick to mislead the American people into supporting even more liberal spending that Democrats promise will pull our nation out of the beginning of a recession. However, you cannot spend a nation out of an economic crisis, and these spending proposals will only create more hardships for the American people.
First, they plan to increase taxes on Americans and hire an army of IRS agents to enforce their new tax hikes. Even though President Biden promised to not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 a year, the tax proposals included in this bill would hit Americans in all tax brackets. The Joint Committee on Taxation — a nonpartisan group that studies the impact of tax policies — has indicated that the increase in taxes would be felt by every income level, even those making less than $10,000 a year. Low and middle-income Americans would pay billions of dollars more in taxes next year if the legislation becomes law, according to their study.
The bill also attacks American energy production. It would place more taxes on petroleum and natural gas producers, which could cause even higher prices at the pump. It directs much of the funds that could be used to bring down costs into Green New Deal proposals, many of which are wasteful projects that will not help solve our current energy needs. Congressional Democrats’ proposal includes a $250 billion slush fund that will fund projects deemed too risky for investment by traditional banks. This is nothing short of mismanagement of American taxpayer dollars.
When I return to Washington this week, I will fight against this egregious waste of taxpayer dollars and will encourage my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to put the American people above radical, leftist proposals by voting "NO" on the so-called "Inflation Reduction Act."
