It’s been a big few weeks for choice in American democracy. As you probably heard, three prominent, cross-partisan groups merged to consolidate their efforts and build the 3rd largest political party in America <[link removed]>. That’s right, Forward merged with the Renew America Movement and Serve America Movement to become…Forward. Same great mission, bigger coalition.
What’s new about the new Forward Party? Andrew Yang, Christine Todd Whitman, and David Jolly explain why this new party will succeed <[link removed]>. The announcement came at the same time as new polling from Suffolk that suggests that only about 1 in 4 Americans <[link removed]> think that the Democratic and Republican parties are good enough to represent America.

The march of primary season is ending with a flourish over the next two months. After this week, only 8 states remain. Sadly, it has been a good primary season for people pushing election conspiracy theories <[link removed]>. In one high-profile case, incumbent Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach the former President, was defeated by 2020 election denier John Gibbs. In that race, Gibbs got a helping hand from an unexpected source, the Democratic Party. who bought last-minute ads functionally boosting his credentials with conservative voters <[link removed]>. It is not the first time the DCCC has come under scrutiny for helping bolster election-denying Republicans in primaries.
Next week the elections continue, with Alaska taking its new non-partisan primary and ranked-choice voting system for a spin in a special election to fill Don Young’s At Large congressional seat. There are three people in the race, and some of the more controversial candidates <[link removed]> aren’t too pleased with how the process might affect their chances.
No doubt other states like Nevada will be watching closely, as they debate adopting open primaries and ranked-choice voting for their elections.
2,000 miles to the east, North Carolina elections officials have certified the Green Party <[link removed]> for ballot access in the upcoming election. The decision angered the Democratic Party which has challenged the signatures and is fighting to keep a Green Party Senate candidate off the ballot. Ballot access remains one of the biggest obstacles for parties challenging the two-party system, and both major parties often wield legal hoops as a tool to prevent competition. Just look at New York, where new hurdles have stripped other party candidates from the ballot <[link removed]>. For the first time in 75 years, voters will have no choice for Governor other than Republican or Democrat.

A bill to fund medical care for veterans affected by toxic “Burn Pits” during their deployments finally passed, after Republicans initially objected to it. <[link removed]>
The Department of Defense is under scrutiny for deleting text messages of senior officials around the January 6th attack on the Capitol. <[link removed]> The deletions raise the specter of obstruction in light of similar erasures by the Secret Service.
The “Inflation Reduction Act” passed after a weekend-long “vote-a-rama” in the Senate. <[link removed]> The bill passed through the reconciliation process to circumvent the filibuster and required Vice President Harris to break a tie.
