In a surprise result, Jamaal's ally and fellow Justice Democrat Ilhan Omar only narrowly won her primary election last night by a few percentage points — meaning the establishment effort to oust progressive representatives from the House might be gaining momentum.
This has to be a wake up call for our movement. Ilhan's race was much too close for comfort — she won by just over 2% — in part because they didn't invest heavily in TV ads and mail pieces to supporters. That means to beat our own conservative Democratic challengers, we have to make the investments to get the word out to every potential voter in NY-16 right away.
We can't afford to let their mission to make Jamaal a one-term member of Congress succeed, John. Most people did not expect Ilhan's election to turn out like this, and our opponents have already turned to Republican-style, racist tactics to try to beat us.
We know that in our own race, anything could happen. We can't take anything for granted. But we're lucky that we have a small window of time to make sure we do everything we can to fight back.
John, there are only three days until folks in NY-16 start early voting, and 13 days until Election Day. That's all the time we have to make the investments needed to win this thing.
