John,
Yesterday President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act into law. And I’m grateful to have been successful in securing an important provision in the bill that ensures HBCUs can access grant money, so that we can diversify and strengthen our workforce while funding our cybersecurity efforts to protect Americans from very real threats.
This was a big legislative win for the country, and an important accomplishment for the President. But it was only one of many.
Just this weekend, the Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act to lower costs – particularly health care costs – for all Americans. The bill also dedicates $369 billion to fighting climate change. That’s the largest single investment in the future of our planet that America has ever made.
But that’s still not all. Democrats have overseen an incredibly productive period of lawmaking in fulfillment of President Biden’s priorities. For example:
-
The American Rescue Plan Act that passed near the beginning of Biden’s presidency and finally allowed us to get a handle on the out-of-control pandemic.
-
The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which not only invests in roads and bridges, but also in clean water, high-speed internet, electric vehicles, rail, and our digital infrastructure.
-
The Safer Communities Act – the first real piece of gun-reform legislation to be enacted in decades.
-
The PACT Act, a significant expansion of veterans health care, despite obstruction from Senate Republicans.
Donald Trump had only one major legislative victory for his agenda while he was in office: a tax cut for corporations and the wealthiest Americans, which meaninglessly increased the deficit and skyrocketed our national debt.
John, we can’t afford to give the reins back to Republicans just for them to run us into the ground again. We need to double down on our efforts to elect more Democrats and deliver for Americans.
We’re just getting started.
