The narrative that success and a better life starts with getting an education has been preached to Black communities for generations. And now, Black people are not only attending college but are graduating at higher rates than before.
But of course, white supremacy has woven its way into our education system – creating unnecessary hurdles for Black students and families.
Here are some not-so-fun stats:
On average, Black people have nearly $53,000 in student loan debt four years after graduation—almost twice as much as their white counterparts.
Black borrowers typically owe 50% more in student debt upon graduation than their white peers.
Four years after graduation, this debt gap increases from 50% to 100%.
