Council reveals outcomes of consultation into Victoria Indoor Market?s future

Victoria Market fish stall

The council has published the outcome of our consultation into the future of Victoria Indoor Market [ [link removed] ], ahead of a final decision being taken.

Earlier this year we put forward a proposal to end the lease, following years of investing in and heavily subsidising the market as costs increased. Ongoing subsidy costs over the remaining 50 years of the lease agreement are estimated to amount to ?39m. This, along with significant Government funding cuts to council grants and changes in shopping habits exacerbated by the Covid 19 pandemic, led to the review which we consulted on.

We know there is a great deal of affection for the market which has been operating for 50 years, with many respondents wanting the council to continue the market?s operation and subsidy and to carry out further investment. However, the council?s officers are likely to recommend the council ends its lease and operation of the Victoria Market. We understand this would be a huge disappointment not only for customers and the wider public, but especially for traders at the market.

We will now embark on further engagement with all traders and the landlord, before a final decision is made.

Wireless taxi charging scheme progressing in UK first for Nottingham

Wireless taxi charging rank Station street

You may be aware we have a UK first in Nottingham with a pilot scheme trialling innovative new Wireless Taxi Charging technology. Construction is progressing fast on the new taxi wireless charging area on Trent Street, just next to Nottingham Station. The fencing is complete, safety systems are installed, road markings are painted and four out of five wireless charging pads have been installed.

You can watch a short video showing how it will work here [ [link removed] ].

Work will continue over the coming weeks to complete the installation and testing at Trent Street. Local taxi drivers will be able to experience the technology for themselves in the coming weeks when the trial goes live.

Eurovision won?t be coming to Nottingham

Eurovision logo

With local partners, we have carefully considered the criteria needed to host the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine and have collectively decided not to put forward a bid.

We have a world-class arena that hosts entertainment superstars and international sporting events, fantastic hotels, restaurants and bars, a vibrant and diverse community and excellent green transport links - but unfortunately Nottingham doesn?t meet the wider capacity requirements for an event of this scale. Our partners including the Nottingham Project, Motorpoint Arena and Marketing Nottingham agree it would have been a great opportunity but that sadly we would have fallen short of what?s required.

It?s really exciting that Eurovision is coming to the UK, presenting a terrific opportunity for another city, and we?d be happy to help with their preparations if we can.

Urgent Government action needed to help struggling households

Person surrounded by bills

The forecasts that annual energy bills are to top ?4,200 from January next year is hugely alarming and we need Government intervention now to avoid serious hardship on a massive scale. This week I will be writing to both of the candidates aiming to be our next Prime Minister to call for an emergency response and an immediate action plan to help households.

The stifling uncertainty caused by inaction is having a profound impact on people?s livelihoods, their mental wellbeing and local spending decisions which without immediate action is likely to cause a huge crisis for people?s financial and mental health. I agree with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who earlier this week called on the UK Government?s emergency response committee to come together to tackle the cost of living crisis with urgent measures and to agree an emergency budget. With millions standing on the edge of financial crisis, we cannot stand by in the face of a national financial emergency ? we need action now.

In the meantime, Nottingham residents facing financial difficulties can find help and advice here [ [link removed] ]
