Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

As you probably know, our motto is "science to solutions". At our core, we use research and data to work toward viable, scalable solutions that address the plastic crisis. This month's newsletter highlights a few current projects that bring this mission to life -- collecting microfibers from the air we breathe, a cleanup that spurred a coalition, and even a community science project that YOU can volunteer for!

FIELD UPDATE

Our Plastic Air project is underway! Our Director of Science, Lisa, and Science Intern, Lucinda, traveled to San Francisco to kick off the research, which aims to better understand microfiber sources. Using biomimicry as inspiration, we set up nearly 100 samplers at a dozen sites to collect microfibers traveling through the air.
KEEP AUSTIN PLASTIC-FREE

Following TrashBlitz Austin, we've been working on the ground to use the cleanup data to work toward solutions. Along with Into the Sea and Inland Ocean Coalition, we launched the Austin Reuse Coalition to support waste reduction solutions for a clean and healthy community. Last week, we celebrated the coalition launch with a kickoff meeting and event in Austin!
