John, Trump and his defenders are desperately lashing out after the FBI executed a search warrant at his Mar-A-Lago home on Monday night. We must escalate our efforts in response -- or risk the possibility that he'll be able to get away with these ever-more brazen attempts to evade responsibility.
Common Cause is ready to fight back against the threat Donald Trump's still poses to our democracy -- through public education, hard-hitting rapid response, and pressure on decision-makers in Congress and the Department of Justice to make sure they do their constitutional duty and hold Trump fully accountable for his actions.
John, if Donald Trump isn’t held accountable for January 6th, it won’t be the last time he tries to overturn an election.
After all, just look at what he’s done since the Senate voted not to convict him for his role in that deadly attack against our nation.
He’s dug in deeper with his Big Lie about the 2020 election. He’s used his clout within the party to boost candidates willing to repeat his lies – which has fueled disastrous suppression laws targeting Black and brown voters in states like Georgia and Texas.
Now, MAGA extremists are in the running for Secretaries of State across the country – meaning elections in states like Arizona and Michigan could soon be administered by Big Lie-spouting conspiracy theorists!
Make no mistake, John, Trump still poses a serious threat to our democracy, and if he is not held accountable, he’ll take it as a practical invitation to step up his attacks.
That’s why Common Cause has made accountability for January 6th one of our top priorities for 2022. I know there are a lot of causes and crises that demand our attention right now – but this is one we can’t let be swept under the rug.
Why? Because to do so would hand the far-right the blank check they want to overturn any election that doesn’t go their way – through rigging the rules, through legal maneuvering, even through violence.
We need to push back however we can. That means educating the public about what the Committee has uncovered. [1] It means making candidates for Congress and state legislatures commit to opposing any effort to nullify our votes. And it means making clear the consequences if the Department of Justice fails to prosecute Trump and his co-conspirators to the full extent of the law.
Common Cause helped bring down a president during Watergate – where one man’s desperation to hang onto power spawned a conspiracy against our democracy itself. But today, the stakes are much, much higher – and so too must be our response.
John, I’m writing to ask if you can step up to help us fund this urgently important campaign for accountability. Your action today will help us ensure that NOBODY is above the law, especially not Donald Trump. Can you rush a contribution of $3 or more today?
Donald Trump fanned the flames of insurrection – and refused to call off the attack despite the desperate pleas of his family and White House staff. The extremists behind January 6th will absolutely use violence again if they are not held accountable.
That means the only way we are going to protect our right to vote and choose our own leaders is by holding every member of this criminal conspiracy accountable. Anything short of that will fall short of this once-in-a-generation challenge our nation faces.
Thank you for all you are doing to defend democracy,
Karen Hobert Flynn, President
and the team at Common Cause
