Friends,
This week, I introduced landmark legislation, called A New Way Forward Act, to restore fairness and due process to our immigration laws and to stop the prison to deportation pipeline. I need your help to organize a movement to support this needed reform.
In the words of the Huffington Post, "The package includes a slew of proposed legislation to overhaul the immigration system, including ending mandatory immigration detention, generally blocking local police from engaging in immigration enforcement and decriminalizing border crossings. It would also seek to disrupt laws that broadly make involvement in the criminal justice system a threat to immigrants’ status in the U.S. ― namely by ending automatic deportation proceedings for people who’ve had certain convictions or other contact with the criminal legal system.”
The reforms of A New Way Forward Act are long overdue. Since the 1990's, anti-immigration laws have wrongly criminalized immigrants throughout the United States. In the 4th Congressional District and beyond, I have met countless families who have been torn apart by these unjust policies.
Even worse, President Trump has weaponized these laws to enforce his relentless attacks against immigrant communities like ours. Whether it is inhumanely separating families at the border, expanding privately-run immigrant jails or denying flu shots to immigrants in detention, Trump has sought to divide and weaken us.
This is wrong. We know that an attack on one community is an affront to us all. We must all stand together to denounce Trump's politics of hatred and division.
Challenging established systems of injustice require grassroots movements that engage voters, amplify community voices, and push for meaningful change. Are you ready to build a nationwide movement for immigration reform?
