It's World Lion Day!
Hi John,
It’s World Lion Day! Today is a special day for Born Free in our Year of the Lion - a year of action for lions in honour of the 100th birth year of our charity's fearless co-founder and lionheart, Bill Travers MBE. Today is also an important opportunity for us to share some of the incredible work we’ve managed to achieve with YOUR support for one of our most iconic flagship species - clinging to survival in their wild ranges.
From our Wild Walkers who have stepped up to the 20K Walk on the Wild Side ( [link removed] ) challenge, to the supporters and donors of our Forever Lions Fund ( [link removed] ), and our King and Elsa's Pride adopters ( [link removed] ), you should all be SO proud of your efforts and achievements to help protect lions for future generations.
This year alone, thanks to YOUR help, we’ve rescued no less than 5 lions from horrendous situations and brought them safely to their new Forever Homes. This takes us to 55 lions rescued in total since we began 38 years ago.
What about Wild Lions? ( [link removed] )
Over the last year, in our spiritual heartland of Meru in Kenya, where Elsa the lioness returned home to the wild, our lion conservation team drove a total of 10,000 miles to collect thousands of hours of vital lion data and intel. Aided by 40 new camera traps, the teams huge efforts paid off, with 65 lions identified, including ten new lion cubs, and two lions rescued from deadly wire snares.
Meanwhile in Amboseli, Kenya, we have reinforced 357 predator-proof livestock ‘bomas’ since 2010. These bomas support 7,500 local people, protect 100,000 cattle and goats, and have lead to a complete reduction in retaliatory lion killings, allowing the lion population to grow 182%, now standing at over 140 lions. Overall, Kenya has reported a 25% lion increase to over 2,500, since our lion conservation work began there 12 years ago!

Huge strides have been made for lions - and with your continued support and generosity, we can create a future where lions continue to grow in numbers and are protected from the many threats they face.
But there are many more lions in need of our help right now – both in captivity and in the wild. If you are able to, please consider supporting our Forever Lions Fund ( [link removed] ) to ensure a forever future for lions.
Thanks once more from Born Free and the lions we support
