Senate Passes Major Climate Bill

After decades of fighting for the health and safety of our planet, we are deeply grateful to our Democratic environmental champions in the Senate for passing the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest investment ever in climate, environmental justice, clean energy, and jobs. The Sierra Club calls on the House to swiftly pass the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which puts us on the path to reducing emissions by 40 percent by 2030.


However, we acknowledge that these climate investments cannot come at the expense of frontline communities. It is unacceptable that oil and gas leasing provisions will be tied to clean energy development. Members of Gulf Coast communities—as well as in other disproportionately affected regions such as Appalachia and Alaska—have named loud and clear that they need the Sierra Club to show up for them. We hear you.

Stop the Drills

Energy company ConocoPhillips is proposing a new drill site in Alaska. Located on the state’s North Slope, the Willow Project is one of the largest new oil proposals in the country—and would mean 250 new wells, 37 miles of roads, 368 miles of pipelines, and the emissions equivalent of 66 coal plants running for a year. The Willow Project is a climate disaster. If allowed to proceed, it has the potential to entirely undo all the clean energy progress we've made and prevent the Biden administration from reaching its stated climate goals.

On August 1, groups submitted more than 31,000 comments

asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny Mountain Valley Pipeline’s request for four more years to build the pipeline—and the Sierra Club drove in one-third of those comments.


In late June, the Sierra Club and 28 partners

delivered more than 72,000 public comments , including 11,686 comments collected by the Sierra Club, urging the Environmental Protection Agency to protect the residents of dozens of states who are unknowingly subjected to harmful air pollution from power plants and industrial facilities hundreds of miles away.

Protect Old-Growth and Mature Forests

Now is the time to protect our federally managed forests and safeguard our communities from the future impacts of climate change. On July 14, the US Department of Agriculture and US Department of the Interior opened a public comment period following President Biden’s Executive Order to conserve mature and old-growth forests.

No More Gas Plants

For years, the Sierra Club and allies have been fighting against the proposed Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC) fossil gas plant in Superior, Wisconsin. Expensive, unneeded, and damaging to public health and the climate—NTEC is a bad deal for us all. The Environmental Protection Agency just said this week that the plant could cost over $2 billion in climate damages. Federal money should not support dirty energy.
