In the biggest step the U.S. has ever taken to lower the carbon emissions causing climate change, the Senate has passed the landmark Inflation Reduction Act. This is a historic moment.

I've long led the fight for climate action in the Senate. Week after week, I have returned to the Senate floor – my ragged Time To Wake Up poster in tow – to call on my colleagues to act. I have done that 284 times over many years.

That's why I was especially proud to have shaped key components of this bill – and even prouder to see them finally make it across the finish line. I worked hard to shape the parts of the bill that crack down on methane, make homes and vehicles more energy efficient, and expand carbon capture technology – all big steps forward in our fight to prevent the worst effects of climate change. 

There's still much more to do until we can leave a safe planet to our children and grandchildren. There's no question there. But I’ve never felt more hopeful that we will be able to get it done. Momentum is now on our side.

It took every single Democrat voting yes to pass this bill, and we could not afford a single defection. We stuck together. Despite all the challenges, our razor-thin Democratic majority has been highly effective in delivering for the American people.

Now, our next priority must be protecting our majority. If we fail to do that, Mitch McConnell won't just undo every bit of our hard-fought progress – he'll take us even further backward by prioritizing the agenda of Big Polluters. I refuse to stand by and let that happen, but it's not a fight I can win alone.
