On Friday, EPPC Fellow Carl R. Trueman released his video essay, “A New Public Liturgy,” with First Things. His latest work chronicles our society’s declining consensus on the fundamental questions of human identity and works to find a source of hope as institutions transform before our eyes. The following is excerpted from the essay.
[We have created] what I've called in times past the Liturgy of the Powers, the need to use a certain language when speaking in public in order to get on in life, in order to be deemed an acceptable member of society. Because we are all expected to perform publicly relative to this understanding of selfhood, relative to this understanding of truth and morality today, we have this liturgy to which we must conform...It may not matter what privately you think inside your head about these things as long as you don't give public expression to it. As long as you use the liturgy as long as you give the appropriate liturgical performance as determined by the powers that be.
We can't turn around the deep-rooted chaos that is gripping our society by the middle of next week...but what we can do is leave a legacy for our children and our children's children and their children after them upon which they can build. We can be witnesses to the truth today in a way that keeps the light going for future generations.
