We wish we could tell you that this is some sick joke, but we are deadly serious. A North Carolina school district is putting AR-15's – with magazines and ammo – in all six schools. They purport that this is for protection, but the truth is that more guns make us all less safe.

Following the horrific mass shooting in Uvalde, TX, where an assault rifle was used to kill 18 children and two adults, Madison Country sheriff said he will "take every measure necessary to ensure our kids are safe in this school system," and, John, this couldn't be further from what's 'necessary'. These weapons don't belong in our streets – and they certainly don't belong in our schools.
Unfortunately, Uvalde is one of many shootings that have been made more deadly by an AR-15 style rifle: Buffalo. Highland Park. Odessa. Dayton. Aurora. Parkland. Poway. Orlando. Las Vegas. Pittsburgh. Newtown. Charleston.
These assault rifles have been the weapon of choice for some of the most heinous mass shootings in our country – because they're designed to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. What our country needs is to ban these assault weapons for good and finally save lives.
It is long past time for life-saving change, John. The Senate has the chance to reinstate the assault weapons ban – that's proven to save lives – and we need to make it urgently clear that it's what Americans want.
