Dear John,

In the newest episode of A Health Podyssey, Yanlei Ma discusses the
relationship between state paid sick leave

mandates and emergency department use.

Removing State Barriers

Responding to an article by Ann Nguyen and coauthors

about New Jersey's COVID-19 Temporary Emergency Reciprocity Licensure
Program, Bianca Frogner expands on the lessons learned

in a Perspective.

Frogner writes that temporary emergency licensure reciprocity policies
"are starting to expire, and the nation may be missing an opportunity to
learn from this natural experiment and improve access to care for
patients."

In response to the data Nguyen and coauthors present to describe the
effect of the emergency licensure reciprocity policies, Frogner
questions the purpose of separate state licenses, given that the
temporary license program supported flexibility and continuity of care
during the pandemic.

Frogner advocates for policy makers to consider removing state barriers
that restrict health care workers in order to address workforce
shortages.
