The bill will lower costs for families at the pharmacy, at the gas pump, and on their monthly energy bills and insurance premiums.

Friend,

On Sunday, we passed the Inflation Reduction Act in the Senate after overcoming hours of cynical GOP obstruction.

This is a victory for Coloradans and for the American people over corporate special interests and the status quo. The bill will lower costs for families at the pharmacy, at the gas pump, and on their monthly energy bills and health insurance premiums. And now, we’re one step closer to energy independence and leading the fight against climate change.

Here’s what the IRA will do:

  • Lower prescription drug and health care costs, by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices — and cap prescription drug costs for seniors at $2,000 a year. Julia from Denver told me that her dad has a heart condition, and he pays $6,000 a month for medication — that’s $72,000 a year for something he needs to take for the rest of his life. That’s outrageous and ends with this bill.
  • Build a fairer tax code by making sure the 200 biggest corporations that report over $1 billion in profit pay their fair share. Colorado teachers, firefighters and police officers shouldn’t be paying more in taxes than Amazon. It’s no wonder most Americans think our tax code is rigged. This comes directly from a bill I helped write.
  • Make a historic investment in climate and clean energy — that includes funding to address droughts in the West and the Colorado River Basin and restore the health of our forests and prevent wildfires. This bill will boost American manufacturing for wind, solar, and batteries to power electric vehicles and our energy grid. When you put it all together, this bill will put us on track to reduce climate pollution by 40% by the end of the decade.

For decades, Washington’s economic agenda has been pretty simple: Let the big corporations do whatever they want and call it “freedom;” slash investments in working families, and cut taxes for the wealthiest individuals.

That left us with income inequality higher than any time since the 1920s and a country that charges families more for health care than most industrialized nations — where seniors are forced to cut their pills in half or skip their prescriptions. We’re left with a nation that is still shackled to a global fossil fuel market dictated by tyrants like Vladimir Putin, despite our abundant resources at home and the urgent threat of climate change.

With this bill, we are showing that government can deliver for working people, not the wealthy and big corporations. I’m more hopeful than ever that we can leave Colorado and our country better for the next generation and build an economy that grows for everyone.

Sincerely,

Michael

P.S. I’m facing a tough re-election campaign, but when I’m re-elected, I’ll continue fighting to protect our environment for generations to come. But first, I’ve got to win this election, and I need your help. Pitch in $10 to fight back against GOP attack ads, win this race, and build on the wins I’ve secured for Colorado’s families.
