Representative Adriano Espaillat Calls for Modernization of Crane and Derrick Safety Standards

Member Urges OSHA to Prioritize Employee Safety by Overhauling Standards and Practices

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) sent a letter to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) urging the consideration of crane and derrick safety standard modernization.

“The recently proposed amendments by the Department of Labor to increase safety standards of the use of cranes and derricks in construction sites fall short and fail to consider the use of new, innovative, and safe technology that has the potential to help save lives,” said Rep. Espaillat. “In 2020, there were more than 1,000 crane violations in the nation, and it is critical OSHA implement crane and derrick technological advancements when amending current safety standards. Doing so compliments the recent implementation of the revised certification requirements within the OSHA Cranes & Derricks in Construction Standard put forth by the Coalition for Crane Operator Safety (CCOS). It is my hope that my call to the Department of Labor will encourage further conversations about the overall modernization of safety standards that prioritize employee safety and aim to prevent accidents at these sites.”

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act's passage marked the beginning of a new wave of public infrastructure, increasing construction projects within our districts. Additionally, the construction industry faces increased labor demand with an estimated 650,000 additional workers needed to meet industry demand this year.

As such, there will be a significant uptick in construction equipment usage, particularly of cranes and derricks, and a need to not only keep up with this uptick but continue to prioritize worker safety. Although significant progress has been made to implement and revise certification requirements within the OSHA Cranes and Derricks construction standards, consideration for emerging technologies has not been considered by OSHA, despite the use of such technologies in the industry.

“It’s critical we meet this moment and bring federal attention to technologies that will allow us to strengthen our infrastructure, reduce job-site risks, and improve efficacy,” he concluded.

Congresista Adriano Espaillat pide modernización de los estándares de seguridad de grúas y cabrias

El congresista insta a OSHA a priorizar la seguridad de los empleados mediante la revisión de los estándares y prácticas

NEW YORK, NY – Hoy, el congresista Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) envió una carta a la Administración de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (OSHA) instándola a que considere modernizar los estándares de seguridad de grúas y cabrias.

“Las enmiendas propuestas recientemente por el Departamento de Trabajo para aumentar los estándares de seguridad del uso de grúas y cabrias en sitios de construcción se quedan cortas y no consideran el uso de tecnología nueva, innovadora y segura que tiene el potencial de ayudar a salvar vidas”, dijo el Rep. Espaillat. “En 2020, hubo más de 1,000 violaciones de grúas en la nación, y es fundamental que OSHA implemente avances tecnológicos en grúas y cabrias al modificar los estándares de seguridad actuales. Al hacerlo, se complementa la implementación reciente de los requisitos de certificación revisados dentro del Estándar de Grúas & Cabrias en la Construcción de OSHA presentado por la Coalición para la Seguridad de los Operadores de Grúas (CCOS). Espero que mi llamado al Departamento de Trabajo fomente más conversaciones sobre la modernización general de los estándares de seguridad que priorizan la seguridad de los empleados y tienen como objetivo prevenir accidentes en estos sitios”.

La aprobación de la Ley de Empleo e Inversión en Infraestructura marcó el comienzo de una nueva ola de infraestructura pública, aumentando los proyectos de construcción dentro de nuestros distritos. Además, la industria de la construcción enfrenta una mayor demanda laboral con un estimado de 650,000 trabajadores adicionales necesarios para satisfacer la demanda de la industria este año.

Debido a esto, habrá un aumento significativo en el uso de equipos de construcción, en particular de grúas y cabrias, y será necesario no solo mantenerse al día con este aumento, sino continuar dando prioridad a la seguridad de los trabajadores. Aunque se ha logrado un progreso significativo para implementar y revisar los requisitos de certificación dentro de los estándares de construcción de Grúas y Cabrias de OSHA, esta entidad no ha considerado las tecnologías emergentes, a pesar del uso de dichas tecnologías en la industria.

“Es fundamental que nos pongamos a la altura de las circunstancias y atraigamos la atención federal a las tecnologías que nos permitirán fortalecer nuestra infraestructura, reducir los riesgos en el lugar de trabajo y mejorar la eficacia”, concluyó Espaillat.
