Migrants are human beings, not political pawns. We’re fighting to protect migrants in NY & at the southern border, and we need your help!

John,

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been inhumanely busing asylum-seekers to New York City as a political stunt, and we won’t stand for it.

No one leaves their home because they feel safe. Migrants seeking refuge and safety often make the trek to the southern border on foot, some walking over 3,000 miles. Gov. Abbott is using people who are fleeing violence and persecution as political pawns to boost his polling numbers by misleading them to get on buses to destinations that some do not want to go to, then not providing them food, water or care in the 36-48 hour long bus ride.

Just a few days ago, a young girl got off a bus in NYC and needed emergency care and insulin. This Sunday, the NYIC quickly organized care packages for another bus and saw the harm and trauma first-hand, as a young man sent on one of these buses was complaining of chest pain and received immediate care.

Governor Abbott’s actions are a clear attack on our humanitarian and legal obligations to asylum-seekers and refugees.

New York City always has and will be a welcoming city. We're working to ensure that the State and City are prepared to provide shelter, care, and services to all who want to be in New York. To stand up for our communities, the NYIC is working with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to coordinate services for these newcomers, including access to shelter and legal services—but it’s not enough.

Families that have been sent over 2,000 miles across the country need immediate care and support. I’ve been featured on CNN ([link removed]) , NY1’s Inside City Hall ([link removed]-) , and on WNYC’s The Brian Lehrer Show ([link removed]) to highlight this developing issue for New York City. Check out this coverage to learn more!

We need your support to ensure that New York City remains a beacon of hope for immigrants and refugees—would you donate to help fund our work today? ([link removed])

Onwards,
