Poynter senior faculty Al Tompkins taught broadcast journalists about five key election issues during a workshop on Aug. 2 at Poynter's campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Chris Kozlowski)
This week the U.S. Senate passed a major spending bill to deal with climate, inflation and health care costs — three topics central to Poynter's latest workshop series, Midterm Essentials ([link removed]) .
In July and August, Poynter taught more than 160 local TV journalists in five battleground states how to meaningfully cover issues important to voters ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
“We urged journalists not to allow candidates to only answer in party talking points and nonsense claims, but to get candidates on the record about issues that voters say are vital to the nation’s future,” said lead faculty Al Tompkins.
In the weeks Poynter held these workshops, the GDP fell for the second consecutive quarter. Poynter’s team of experts helped journalists understand why and what it means in a pandemic-confused economy.
As floods washed through St. Louis and Eastern Kentucky and the nation suffered through a heat wave, Poynter taught journalists how to ask smarter questions about climate change.
While states were holding midterm primary races, Poynter explained how journalists can battle disinformation that confuses voters and obscures important issues.
“I believe that TV stations, especially, have an obligation to aggressively cover the midterm elections because the TV stations, uniquely, profit from these races through the extensive political advertising,” said Tompkins. “We cannot allow the public to make their voting decisions based solely on ads that promote fake claims and political mudslinging over the real exploration of a candidate’s record and promises.”
We’re less than 100 days away from the midterms. On behalf of your audience, stay sharp with more Poynter resources and training.
