MCLA Community Engagement Tour/MCLA en La Comunidad!
Group photos
The Hispanic/Latine community is a dynamic and growing force in Minnesota. This July, we invited Hispanic/Latine residents and civic leaders of Owatonna, St. Paul, Crookston, and Minneapolis to take part in our listening session tour, which took place on July 19, 21, 23, and 28th, respectively. The goal of these listening sessions is to hear directly from Hispanic/Latine Minnesotans about their experiences, concerns, and ideas for what our community needs to thrive. The insights generated from these listening sessions will help guide MCLA?s legislative agenda for 2023.
This year we focus on engaging with Hispanic/Latine youth in Minnesota. We want to provide a space for our youth to learn about the legislative process and about how they can be involved in developing solutions for their communities.
At each location, we asked the participants to share their thoughts and concerns related to a variety of policy areas, including education, economic development, health care, and culture/belonging. We also encouraged participants to share ideas of what needs to be done to address existing barriers and challenges.
The listening sessions offered a space for Hispanic/Latine Minnesotans to share their experiences and ideas of what they want to see in their communities. These insights will help guide the work of the council in the next two years and help us to better advise Minnesota?s elected officials. We are working on a report based on the findings of these listening sessions, which will be published and shared with the community at end of September.
We want to thank all the participants who took the time to attend the listening sessions and provided us with invaluable feedback.
Our gratitude also goes to all the local partners who have made these events possible. They are the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, Alliance for Greater Equity and South-Central College (Owatonna); Comunidades Latinas Unidas en Servicio (St. Paul); In-Progress, and University of Minnesota Crookston (Crookston); Waite House | Pillsbury United Communities (Minneapolis).
Our last listening session will take place on Sunday, September 4th at the St. Alphonsus Church in Brooklyn Center. Below, you will find information regarding the event and how to register.
