During the 2020 impeachment of former President Trump, Elissa had to get very comfortable with one thing: the prospect that she might lose her next race.
She was in a district that had voted for President Trump, and in town hall after town hall, his supporters expressed their anger at the impeachment trial. Nonetheless, Elissa held to her convictions and took the vote she felt was right for the country.
Elissa was re-elected in 2020, but getting very comfortable with losing her seat freed her up to focus on doing what was right for the country, not drilling down on ideology and trying to win another election.
In recent years, Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has turned into a symbol of those same values. As much as Elissa may disagree with Congresswoman Cheney on policy, her work on the January 6th committee and willingness to vote against the former president (in a state where his popularity remains high) exemplifies the higher calling of doing what’s best for our country.

Right now, our country doesn’t need ideologues. We need leaders who put country over party, who show up every day serious about the job voters have elected them to do – and who will work with anyone with the same mindset.
That mindset isn’t always flashy, and it won’t always trend on Twitter. But it is how tangible, pragmatic solutions to our toughest problems are often hashed out.
