Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Ducky Nguyen. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected].)

Congratulations to Ducky for correctly identifying Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). According to our friends at Virginia Native Plant Society, Wild Bergamot is a lovely native flower that is visited by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its leaves have a minty smell. Wild bergamot provides an excellent background or mass of color in the perennial garden, especially when mixed with purple coneflower, lavender, phlox, black-eyed Susan and asters. Not a fussy plant, wild bergamot will grow well in sandy clay to light loamy soil, in fairly well drained, sunny locations. It tolerates drought and light shade and is not bothered by insect pests.
