John, after more than a year of negotiations, I am thrilled that Senate Democrats passed a bill containing major parts of the Build Back Better agenda.
The Inflation Reduction Act is the country’s biggest investment in fighting climate change ever. $369 billion will go towards clean energy technology and reducing carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. The bill will lower energy costs and provide subsidies to folks for electric vehicles and renewable energy home updates.
We also empower Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices, which will lower Rx costs. We extend critical subsidies for millions of folks with health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. And we begin to ensure that the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations pay their fair share of taxes.
We would not have won the progressive policies in the bill without our hard work advocating for the people. The Congressional Progressive Caucus has been a key part of the push for this bill, and our work is paying off. Progressives in Congress and in the movement held the line and demanded action on these priorities. Even up against the GOP, Big Pharma, and corporate lobbyists, we kept fighting.
Now, we need to pass this bill in the House. And, as Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I will continue my fight to secure these wins for the people.
This is another major step towards using our Democratic majorities and President Biden in the White House to deliver for the people. We did it with the American Rescue Plan and infrastructure spending, and we can do it again with the Inflation Reduction Act.
Not every one of our policies made it into this bill, which means I won’t only be fighting to pass this bill, but I’ll be working to strengthen our majority in Congress so we have two more years of legislating for progressive change.
I will keep you updated as we work towards passing this historic piece of legislation through the House.
In solidarity,
Pramila
