Throughout the weekend, Israelis endured an onslaught of 1,100 rockets fired by Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.
The rockets were fired from populated areas in Gaza toward populated areas in Israel—a double war crime.
Despite having to rush to bomb shelters, and the trauma of constant air raid sirens, Israeli families were protected from the rockets. They were kept safe thanks to Iron Dome.
Some 380 rockets that would have otherwise crashed into residential areas were intercepted by the life-saving defense system we lobby for each year.
Each interception was a powerful reminder that our work to build bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship—and our support for pro-Israel Democrats and Republicans in Congress—saves lives.
David Makovky joins AIPAC to analyze the three-day conflict between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in which the Iranian-backed terrorist group launched over 1,000 rockets toward the Jewish state.
David Makovsky is the Ziegler distinguished fellow at The Washington Institute and director of the Project on Arab-Israel Relations. He is also an adjunct professor in Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). In 2013-2014, he worked in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of State, serving as a senior advisor to the Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations.
