John,
We mean it when we say #ProtectBlackWomen. That's why we need to talk about Brittney Griner.
Brittney Griner was first detained in Russia in February when she was arrested at the Sheremetyevo International Airport after customs found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. On Friday of last week, Brittney was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison for…wait for it…
0.7 grams of THC.
While we are grateful for the recent efforts of President Biden to bring her home, the response to Brittney's detainment from U.S. media and elected officials has been low-scale, and has had relatively low media attention. It's abundantly clear that the concern for Brittney's safe return has not been made a priority for U.S. officials, and it's long overdue for more swift action to get her home.
Once again, we have Black women to thank for organizing and leading the fight to #BringBrittneyHome – Black Feminist Future launched the #BringBrittneyHome campaign in order to raise awareness and amplify the urgency to U.S. officials.
Black Feminist Future focuses on the dynamic possibilities of galvanizing the social and political power of Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people towards liberation. They help to build and nourish the leadership of fierce Black feminists, fortifying aligned organizations and movements, and shifting cultural norms.

It's been over 5 months since Britney was detained in Russia.
That's 5 months too long.
Let's continue to uplift and follow the lead of Black Feminist Future in this fight to
#BringBrittneyHome.
We love, value, and honor Black women even when our country doesn't.
In love and solidarity,
