Dear Green American, Our country is experiencing unprecedented climate disasters, including record-setting flooding from Yellowstone to Kentucky, and punishing heat waves nationally, along with wildfires and devastating drought. Much of the global community is experiencing the same – and worse. While Congress finally is taking some meaningful steps to address the climate crisis, we need immediate solutions to match the magnitude of the crisis, which is worsening with delayed action and continued support for the fossil fuel industry.
In addition to Congressional action, we need Presidential action. Now is the time for President Biden to declare a climate emergency under the National Emergencies Act. There is no other agency, rule-maker, or court that can achieve what Biden’s declaration of a climate emergency would make possible. Declaration of a climate emergency opens the door to a new, wide range of possibilities, including: - Greatly accelerating renewable energy production,
- Ending offshore drilling,
- Halting US crude oil exports,
- Advancing low-carbon transportation nationally,
- Cutting greenhouse gas emissions through EPA enforcement,
Blocking the import of climate-damaging products such as those made from illegally harvested timber from the Amazon In July, a group of U.S. senators urged the president to declare a climate emergency. Twenty-three national governments have already declared a climate emergency. The US, a top climate polluter, must also take this bold climate action. Let’s keep the momentum going for the climate policies that will make the greatest, positive difference! For people & the planet,
