Dear Friend,

The healthcare system in this country is designed to generate profit for the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. It is not designed to keep or help us heal.

On average, Americans pay three times more than citizens of any other developed nation for healthcare, and we see worse health outcomes.

It is unconscionable that in this country that we allow this industry to buy our politicians and our elections to maintain a system where their CEOs rake in millions while everyday Americans go bankrupt because someone in our family gets sick, is involved in an accident or needs round-the-clock care. This is not healthcare, it is wealthcare.

The healthcare system in this country is working as it was designed. It’s not broken, it’s fixed. It’s fixed in such a way that our health and our care are the least of industry’s concerns.

A single-payer, universal, healthcare system guarantees care for all, and it will cover much needed items and care including hearing aids, eye glasses, dental care and long-term care. It will ensure every Mainer -- and every American -- will receive quality healthcare and affordable prescription drugs.

Other politicians running in this race would rather rely on bad policy that will leave crucial services underfunded as well as many Mainers underinsured or not insured at all.

Right now, we are in a battle between what is right, and what is easy . This battle will never be won by politicians dependent on corporate cash and special interests.

I believe that no one should have to ration their life-saving medication. Nobody should be asked, while in their hospital bed, if they can afford treatment. No insurance company, no pharmaceutical CEO, should make a profit off of people’s suffering.
