The U.S. is about to go backward on marriage equality.

Dear Friend,

Marriage equality is hanging by a thread in the Supreme Court, where Justice Clarence Thomas has proposed overturning Obergefell v. Hodges.(1)

Why hasn't the Senate acted yet?

The House of Representatives has passed the Respect for Marriage Act to codify marriage equality, and now the Senate needs to pass this bill.(2) Will you sign our petition asking the Senate to act for the LGBTQ+ community?

Tell the Senate: Pass the Respect for Marriage Act!

Nearly two million LGBTQ+ people live in California, and those who are married rely on a court decision overturning Prop 8 for legal protections over their property, children, and healthcare.(3)

But if the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell -- as they did with Roe v. Wade -- the other cases protecting marriage equality will fall like dominoes, and there is no law in California, or a federal one, protecting this right.

This isn't speculation, either. More than 30 states have laws on the books prohibiting same-sex marriage that will threaten marriage equality if Obergefell falls.

The Respect for Marriage Act should be a no-brainer, and five Senate Republicans are already on board -- putting us just five votes away from a filibuster-proof vote. But others, including Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, are calling the act a “stupid waste of time” and are pushing other Republicans to vote against it.(4)

The civil rights of millions of American families are at risk -- that is anything but a “waste of time”! Tell the Senate to pass this bill now!
