Hear Satartia first responders share their stories.
John --
There are many concerns landowners across Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Illinois & Minnesota have about the proposed carbon pipeline companies and their untested plans.
Their most pressing concern is always safety, and what can happen in the worst case scenario of a CO2 pipeline rupture -- like what happened in Satartia, Mississippi in 2020.
The Pipeline Fighters Hub webinar tomorrow evening (Aug. 9) will focus on the critical safety concerns with carbon pipelines.
The panel includes Dan Zegart -- the journalist who covered the shocking details of the Satartia pipeline rupture that sent at least 45 people to the hospital, and months later continued to cause health issues for the victims, in his story "The Gassing of Satartia."
Also joining the panel will be two local Mississippi first responders who were there that day and who went out to help the victims who placed those harrowing 911 calls that Dan's reporting uncovered. [1]
Two years after the incident on May 26th, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a $4 million fine against pipeline operator Denbury. PHMSA also released a scathing 269-page report that includes direct input from first responders, and an updated safety advisory for the entire pipeline industry.
PHMSA's report found that "Denbury failed to tell emergency officials and some people living near the line about the dangers if the pipeline were to rupture," and "the company 'significantly' underestimated the size of the area likely to be affected by a release of CO2." [2]
Join us tomorrow to hear from journalist Dan Zegart and the Satartia first responders.
