This past weekend was the anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
As a monumental piece of legislation, it was fundamental in preventing racial discrimination in voting and ultimately ensuring that everyone can exercise their right to vote.
But almost 70 years later, the protections offered by the Voting Rights Act are STILL under attack and many of my colleagues in Congress and the Supreme Court have refused to protect this constitutional right.
The Supreme Court has already swept away a key provision in which certain jurisdictions with a history of discrimination need to submit any proposed changes in voting procedures before it goes into effect.
So, it’s more important now than ever that we expand protections for voting rights in Congress. Without it, acts to chip away at the right to use our voices will continue by the Supreme Court and state legislatures across the country.
That’s why this November is paramount to ensure we keep our House majority and make strides to safeguard our fundamental right to vote. This is our chance to make a long-lasting change.
