John, The US Senate passed a major climate bill that puts the country on track to reduce emissions by 40% by the end of the decade. While this accomplishment should be celebrated, it came with major concessions to the fossil fuel industry secured by Senator Joe Manchin.
“Mr. Manchin’s recent surprise agreement to back the Biden administration’s historic climate legislation came about in part because the senator was promised something in return: not only support for the pipeline in his home state, but also expedited approval for pipelines and other infrastructure nationwide, as part of a wider set of concessions to fossil fuels.” Again, there is no doubt that progress should be celebrated, but this is also where states can step in and continue to fight. We need each state to adopt a Green New Deal that focuses on creating the jobs necessary to transition to 100% of our economy towards renewable energy. Doing so helps us continue to work towards the finish line fighting climate change, creates progressive policies that help working families, and elevates progressive legislators who can further lead our country by running for federal office too!
