Welcome to our weekly newsletter about mental health services and support available in Barnet and beyond. Also bringing you updates on Inclusion Barnet mental health news. Produced by Ed Peston, Communications Assistant.

If you’re not already a member and would like to be, you can sign up today!

- lived experience of disability (including long-term conditions or mental health issues), or:

- care for a disabled family member of a friend who does, and:

- are aged 18 or over, and you live, work or study in Barnet

then you are eligible to join. You can choose how much or little you want to be involved, including the option to be a silent supporter.

Job vacancy – Healthwatch Manager (peer role)

We’re hiring for a new Manager to lead our Healthwatch Barnet team!

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with lived experience of disability (which could include a long term condition or mental health issue) to lead a small team in the delivery of Barnet’s statutory Healthwatch function.

Full-time: Permanent

Events and News from the Web Free Workshop: Let's Talk Resilience (From Mid West Aries), Thursday 11 August, 10.00am - 12.00pm

In this workshop Mid West Aries will discuss the understanding of what resilience means and why it is important for our mental health and well-being. Mid West Aries will discuss and experience personal tools and skills that can be applied in our lives now and in the future to be resilient people.

The Gatherings - a monthly online LGBTQ+ space (From Rainbow Mind), Saturday 13 August, 11.00am - 2.00pm

The Gatherings offer LGBTQ+ people a “brave space” to explore some common core themes and challenges of life: Love; Loss; Imperfection, Perfection & the Inner Critic; The Pain of Disconnection and Connection; Challenging Emotions, and an Invitation to Like Yourself.

They are a space for being, questioning, conversing, and sharing, and are free and open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ or Gender, Sex and Relationship Diverse (GSRD).

A talk at The Claremont Project, 24 White Lion Street, London N1 9PD, Tuesday 9 August, 6.30 – 8.30pm

A talk at the Claremont Project relating to a recent participatory project commissioned by KELDER called Chapel Market Print Club, which engaged local people living with mental health difficulties to respond creatively to the sights, sounds and social exchanges of the daily street market.

Phoebe Eustance, head of research at Hospital Rooms, joins the artist-facilitators of Chapel Market Print Club to consider the impact of the project, share examples of creative interventions in mental health settings, and to discuss the value of art and shared creative experiences for people living with mental health difficulties.

#B2022 legacy on mental health awareness: Better Health campaign (Article from Faith Action)

Everyone can benefit from taking simple steps to look after their mental health and wellbeing, but people don’t always understand the positive link with physical activity.

As part of the Physical Activity & Wellbeing legacy ambition for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which aims to ‘accelerate awareness and understanding of mental health and wellbeing issues’, DHSC is asking partners to support a Commonwealth Games-inspired campaign to encourage the population to get active as a means of improving their mental wellbeing (as well as their physical health).

Around 91% feel people with mental health issues are treated differently at work (From Metro)

While speaking about mental health has become more normalised, the reality of accepting it still has a long way to go.

It seems one of the most taboo settings to accept mental health issues is in the workplace – which is tragic, considering it’s where most of us spend the majority of our time.

We are a Peer-Led Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisation (DDPO).

Nearly all of our directors and staff have lived experience of disability, including mental health issues and/or long-term health conditions.

We believe that learning to use our lived experience for social change is a skill. We have become experts in harnessing the lived experience of our staff, members, volunteers and the people who use our services to design and deliver higher quality, more person-centred services.
