Hi there, John. I'm Trudy's daughter, Christina. This is a bit of a longer email, but I hope you'll take a moment to read it – that would mean so, so much to me.
You see, right now, there’s a compassion deficit in Washington. Far too many politicians respond to tough times with a quick photo op and a one-way ticket back to D.C. They fail to lead hurting communities to a place of healing and progress. And they refuse to take bold action to prevent these tragedies from happening again.
My mom is nothing like them. Time and time again, when faced with tragedy, she has taken action in the wake of heartbreak.
When my mom was only 17, she lost her 8-year-old sister – the very girl I was named for – in a brutal car crash. But instead of turning toward hopelessness and despair, she faced the tragedy with bravery and compassion. My mom sat by her sister's bedside for 12 long days, watching the nurses and doctors do everything they could to save her. And then, she resolved to become a pediatric nurse to help save lives and comfort families.
Decades later, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. My mom again stepped up to serve and care for him. When he died at only 49, and while she coped with her own loss and grief, she led my five siblings and me through one of the hardest periods of our lives with empathy, tenderness, and so, so much love. And then, once our family had found its footing, she found purpose in her pain once more and began providing hospice care, helping comfort patients and families through some of their darkest moments.
And nearly two years ago, after a years-long battle with addiction and almost 500 days of sobriety, my brother died from an opioid overdose. Again, she turned her heartbreak into action. Mom channeled it into running for Senate to end the opioid epidemic, making sure other moms don't have to experience the unimaginable pain she feels.
Somehow, while almost everyone else is paralyzed by grief, my mom wields her pain into something powerful, and she uses it to change others' lives for the better.
In the Senate, you can trust that my mom isn’t going to just sit by and do nothing while gun violence wrecks family after family, while we are being stripped of our constitutional rights, or while daily life is becoming more and more expensive. Instead, she'll take bold, compassionate action to heal communities, confront these crises, and lead us forward.
Even in the midst of the worst, most personal tragedies, my mom has done the hard work for her community. And that is exactly that type of leader that she will be in the U.S. Senate. But she needs your help to get there, John. So please, before my mom's next midnight fundraising deadline, will you make a grassroots donation to bring compassion and action back to Washington? Your support is so important to winning in November.
