John, you would love Lin Wellford.
An industrial hog farm was fouling her beloved Buffalo National River in Arkansas, a pristine oasis of crystal waters and lush forests. Pollution from hog waste harmed 70 miles of her river. Lin asked American Rivers for help, and we placed the river on our list of America’s Most Endangered Rivers® of 2019.
And, we won: John, thousands of supporters like you spoke up, calling and emailing Arkansas Governor Hutchinson. Just weeks after the Endangered Rivers announcement in April, the governor agreed to close the hog farm, and he put a ban on new industrial hog farms in the watershed.
This was a huge win, and it’s a great example of how American Rivers works with local partners to protect rivers from urgent threats. And it showed just how important our supporters are to our work.

“I definitely think American Rivers played a huge part in taking our plight to a national level. Kudos to you and all your supporters for helping us finally hit a tipping point that no one thought we would ever hit.”
“Please spread the news far and wide to give all those other river advocates hope that they too may slay the dragons they face,” says Lin.
