It seems like every week we hear about a new problem with clean water access in the Great Lakes State. This week was more of the same.
We just heard that Wolverine Worldwide has to pay $69.5 million to extend water service to over 1,000 homes in Kent County due to PFAS contamination, after spending years burying the chemicals and waste products they used for tanning leather.
It's time we elect a legislature that will make fighting for clean water and environmental protections a priority. Will you chip in $15, $25 or $50 today to make that a reality?
In Washtenaw County, we know this all too well. The Huron River regularly has "Do Not Eat" fish advisories due to PFAS contamination, and we have been fighting to clean up the Dioxane Plume in our own backyard for decades.
For years, we have fought to hold polluters accountable and protect our drinking water. But we have constantly been held back by Republicans refusing to put in the necessary work and policies to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
This is why we need a Democratic majority in the State House.
Earlier this year, Governor Whitmer moved to protect public health and preserve our environment by shutting down the “corporate polluter panels”. Republicans overruled her.
I co-sponsored the “Polluter Pay Bill” that would hold polluters accountable and require them to pay their share for the messes they create. Republicans refuse to hold a hearing.
My colleagues and I introduced a bill to repeal the “No Stricter than Federal” law, so we won’t have to wait for Washington to do what is best for our communities. Republicans refuse to hold a hearing.
