Chutzpah – the Yiddish word for courage or boldness.
In 1906, my great-grandfather left his home in Poland to settle in Alabama. He made the dangerous journey through Europe and across the Atlantic, and landed somewhere completely unknown. That took impressive chutzpah.
My great-grandfather believed so strongly in the promise of America – a place where he could be Jewish without harm, where he could forge his own path – that he left his whole world behind.
That promise came true for him. I got to grow up in a safe, strong, democratic America. Then, at 17, I joined the Navy to defend it.
And as a Congresswoman, when our democracy was threatened, I stood up to protect it.
Some folks said I would be crazy to vocally support impeachment back in 2020. Then, they told me it would be a career-ending mistake to tell the American people the truth about the attack on our democracy.
I did it anyway (luckily, chutzpah runs in my family).
Coastal Virginians deserve a leader who will unapologetically fight for our democracy. So, can I count on you to contribute $25 or whatever you can to help me pull ahead of my far-right opponent in this battleground race?
In three months, we’ll head to the polls for our first Election Day since the attack on our Capitol. I hope you’ll be by my side through all of this mishigas, so we can restore America’s promise for all.
With gratitude,
Elaine Luria
